Emergent Reading

Letter Recognition:

• Identifies the names and sounds of most letters of the alphabet.

Phonemic Awareness:

• Hears likenesses and differences in rhyming words.
• Identifies beginning sounds in words.
• Understands that sounds are represented by letters.

Concepts of Print:

• Recognizes differences between print, illustrations, letters and words.
• Identifies the front and back of books and where a reader begins to read a story.

Comprehension:

• Retells stories using beginning, middle and end.
• Forms opinions about stories (e.g., I liked…, I didn’t like…).

Enjoyment of Books:

• Begins to develop a personal appreciation of books and authors.

Communication:

• Speaks audibly and intelligibly.
• Expresses thoughs in complete sentences.
• Begins to retell stories and events in a logical order.
• Begins to discuss information viewed.
• Uses visuals to communicate.

Writing

• Self-selects and stays on topic.
