Reading

Comprehension:

• Retells text with sequencing, organization, important ideas, and details.
• Summarizes text (focusing on characters, setting, problem, events and resolution).
• Makes inferences and personal connections; draws conclusions and forms opinions about events, characters, and setting based on supporting evidence from the text and personal experience.

Decoding:

• Readily applies meaning (context clues, background knowledge); knowledge of English language (sentence structure and grammar); and visual information (phonics, knowledge of word parts).

Independent Reading:

• Reads silently for information, pleasure and insight.
• Develops personal appreciaition for different genres and favorite authors and illustrators.
• Maintains a balance between fiction and nonfiction reading.

Writing

Writing Process:

• Self-selects and stays on topic maintaining a focus.
• Expresses voice.
• Considers audience.
• Revises content to make meaning clear.
• Self-edits selected pieces for conventions and grammar.

• Writes with organization, voice, appropriate content, and mechanics.

Grammar and Usage:

• Writes in complete sentences using varied sentence structure.
• Capitalizes proper nouns, the first word in a sentence and titles.
• Uses periods, question marks, and exclamation points correctly.

Spelling:

• Uses more conventional spelling in writing.

Handwriting:

• Prints legibly using correct formation with appropriate spacing between words and sentences.

Communication

• Speaks clearly and audibly using correct verb tense and complex oral language structure.
• Actively participates in group discussions.
• Asks relevant questions to gain information and responds to questions of others with appropriate elaboration.
• Summarizes information viewed.
• Uses technology and visuals to communication.
