Literacy

Reading

Comprehension:

  • Retells text with sequencing, organization, important ideas, and details.
  • Describes settings, characters, problems, sequences of events, and reslolution.
  • Forms and supports opinions about the text using personal experience and/or revisiting the text.
  • Makes predictions and draws conclusions.

Decoding:

  • Uses picture clues, context clues, and background knowledge to gain meaning.
  • Uses knowledge of English language which includes sentence structure and grammer.
  • Uses letter/sound associations (phonics) which include breaking words into smaller words and looking for word parts.

Independent Reading:

  • Reads silently for information, pleasure and insight.
  • Develops personal appreciaition for different genres and favorite authors and illustrators.
  • Maintains a balance between fiction and nonfiction reading.

Writing

Writing Process:

  • Uses periods, question marks, and exclamation points correctly.

Spelling:

  • Uses more conventional and less developmental spelling to express ideas.
  • Uses correct spelling for high-frequency words and words with regular spelling patterns.

Handwriting:

  • Prints legibly using correct letter formation with appropriate spacing between words and sentences.

Communication

  • Speaks audibly and intelligibly.
  • Begins to use correct verb tense and increasingly complex sentence structure.
